Nas has been touring on the anniversary of Illmatic all year, and as the year comes to a close, it is appropriate that the NYC rapper looks to the future.
Of course, even when debuting a new song, “The Season,” which we first heard debuted at a Run the Jewels 2 event this week and now appears in its studio version, Nas still has one foot in tradition, as the song features a classic beat from J Dilla (the original is called “Gobstopper,” and can be found on Dilla’s legendary Donuts album) for him to rap over.

As Rap-Up points out, Nas directly addresses this in his rhymes, saying, “Dilla lives on / It’s like he wrote it with me / The soulful sample compliments my rhymes so well.” It’s hard to disagree with him after hearing the song, which sounds like Nas at his very best.
